W. 49th Street (between Broadway and 8th Avenue)
Double rooms from $104

It’s easy to be charmed by this aging beauty of a hotel. The photos of Broadway legends on the lobby’s wood-polished walls tell you everything about the location. Right next door is the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, currently home to the very popular “Book of Mormon”. Rooms are not trendy by any means, but they do come with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs.

This two-star spot is a rare breed in New York City — a family-run hotel with incredibly low rates. As one of the best deals near Times Square, guests shouldn’t expect luxury. But the simple rooms and sparkling clean bathrooms are well worth the price. The sitting lounge in the back of the hotel is a nice place to flip through your guidebook before heading out for the day.
